### Area info

Area is the measure of a flat space or surface and determines the extent of 2-D and 3-D objects. For that reason, the SI unit (International System of Units) for area is square meter (m^{2}).

The area of quadrilaterals equals the multiplication of the length and the height. Furthermore, all polygons can be broken down into triangles. Therefore, 1/2 * length * height formulates the area of a triangle, and so all polygons. Also, the well-known formula πr^{2} calculates the area of a circle.

When calculating surface areas, the object can be theoretically cut and flattened out. This creates a 2-D shape from which the final value can be derived.

The acre is a non-metric unit that is equal to 43,560 square feet or 1/640 square miles. The unit forms part of both the imperial and US customary system. Supposedly, the measurement originates from amount of land that a yoke of oxen could plough in one day.

The hectare, however, is a metric unit that is equal to 10,000 square meters or 100 ares, which is largely defunct. Therefore, it is itself a hundredth of a square kilometer. In contrast to the are, the hectare is the most common land measure around the world.
